News from Pastor Ben Brown

December 6, 2017

It is with a heavy but grateful heart that I need to share some news. Courtney and I will be gone on Sunday, December 10, visiting a church in view of a call. I have been offered the Student Minister position, and if voted upon, we plan to accept it. I, therefore, am resigning from First Baptist Church effective December 29, 2017.

First Baptist will always be a very special place to me. This is the place that I baptized my first student. We sent students on mission to Habitat, Clue Camp, Passport Choices, Mission Madness, Disciple Now weekends, and Fall Retreats. I’m thankful for the people that I’ve met here and the opportunity that I had to serve. I’m humbled by every chance I’ve had to serve communion, to preach, to offer prayers, and to share meals. First Baptist has been a blessing in my life.

Pastor Barrett will be taking on additional roles with the youth ministry in order to help maintain our regular rhythm. We have been working closely together for the past few weeks and something he keeps stressing to me is that no major calendaring events will change. We will still be hosting Mission Madness in March, sending a team to Brazil in July, and attending Passport Missions this summer. Sunday School, Wednesday Evenings, and Sunday Night Live will continue as well.

As Courtney and I follow God's calling, we know that God has a plan for the church. God is present here and will continue to guide First Baptist Waynesboro.

Thankful for each of you,

Pastor Ben

First Baptist Calls Minister to Families with Children

It is with great excitement I announce to you our new Minister to Families with Children, Lacey B. Davis. Lacey comes with a passion for teaching Jesus to kids. She will be an asset to our already impressive staff, and her expertise will immediately impact our ministry to families with kids when she begins on Monday, October 31.

Lacey's presence as a minister symbolizes a year's worth of praying, strategic planning, and believing that God's future for us includes the families with children of Waynesboro. It is an honor to add her to our staff!

Please be in prayer for Lacey as she seeks to transition over the next few weeks. Be also in prayer for us as we continue to seek God's dreams for us. It is truly an exciting time in the life of our church!

With hope,

Pastor Barrett

Introducing our Children's Candidate: Lacey Davis

It is with great excitement I announce to you our Children’s Search Committee’s candidate for our Minister to Families with Children position, Lacey B. Davis. Attached is a snapshot of Lacey’s biography and faith journey.

Lacey's Bio and Faith Journey

When asked, the chair of the search committee, Nita Hughes, said, “Our committee vetted Lacey through five rounds of interviews including essays, writing samples, phone, Skype, and face-to-face interviews, and when we took a vote, it was unanimous in favor of calling her. She is qualified and ready to do an excellent job here at First Baptist.”

I am sure, like me, you are interested in getting to know her. We will have that chance on both Saturday and Sunday, September 10-11. Please see Lacey’s call weekend itinerary below.

This is truly an exciting time in the life of First Baptist! We look forward to your participation in Lacey’s call weekend.

Warm regards,

Rev. J. Barrett Owen, Senior Pastor

Church Approves Online Member Directory

At our last business meeting it was recommended and accepted that we start a digital online church directory that could be edited and updated any time.  With computer capabilities, we would always have current contact information for those attending First Baptist Church.

The FBC Diaconate Connections Team is excited to have this opportunity to begin the process.  We feel this is a vital mission that will enhance communication and community for our loving and caring congregation.  If you would like your family to be included in the new directory, please provide us with your current contact information.  If we do not receive your data, you will be contacted personally.  For attendees who do not have computers, we will offer hard copies of the directory for a nominal fee.

We will include photos in the directory.  Connecting a face to a name is a wonderful way to recognize and acknowledge each other when we come face to face in our church and community.  We would like everyone to be able to submit an appropriate family photo.  We will establish a link on our website that will let you upload a photo for the directory.  For those who do not have a recent photo, we are going to offer opportunities for our great church photographers to snap your picture for the directory on several Sundays at church.  There will be no cost to you.

As we start a new chapter with our new staff members full time in August, this is a wonderful way to connect and express our gratitude to a loving God for a caring and giving church family.  With a new directory, Barrett and Ben will be able to put names to faces much quicker and be able to contact us quickly and confidently.

For enrollment you can easily complete the online form or print and return to the church by August 30th.

We are excited to announce that the congregation voted to call Rev. J. Barrett Owen as our next Senior Pastor!

The church voted on Sunday, June 14, to call Rev. J. Barret Owen as our Senior Pastor. With the genuine joy that comes from answered prayers, we are pleased to introduce you to Rev. J. Barrett Owen.

Extending a call to Rev. Owen is truly historic for First Baptist. Not since 1911, have we had the opportunity to call a minister to his first full-time pastorate.  Rev. Owen has served the past seven years as a bi-vocational senior pastor, first at Union Baptist Church and currently at National Heights Baptist Church in Georgia, where he spearheaded fundraising for both missions and capital improvements.  Both churches associate with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.  Rev. Owen has also served full-time as the Associate Director of Admissions at the McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University, a well-regarded Baptist university in Atlanta, Georgia.

Rev. Owen took his undergraduate degree from Belmont University, receiving a B.A. in Christian Leadership in 2007. He quickly followed with two graduate degrees, a Master of Divinity from McAfee School of Theology at Mercer in 2010 and a Master of Theology in Homiletics from Candler School of Theology at Emory University in 2012.

With the benefit of his graduate degrees, Rev. Owen has served as adjunct professor at Mercer for the past two years. Rev. Owen regularly contributes to the Baptist News Global and EhicsDaily.com. To expand the reach of the McAfee School of Theology, Rev. Owen founded and is Editor in Chief of Mercer’s Tableaux and Tableaux.com.  Through these and other avenues, Rev. Owen has developed not just comfort, but real expertise with social media. In short, Rev. Owen presents a mature, focused leader in preaching and spiritual formation.

Please join the Pastor Search Committee in welcoming Rev. Owen to First Baptist Church. Calling Rev. Owen as our next Senior Pastor is the next step in God’s call to all of us as community of faith and part of His larger vision for First Baptist Church in our community and our mission.

Rev. Owen will begin his ministry in Waynesboro on August 10.
