Theologian Eugene Peterson once said, “Ordination is both a 'call from above' and a 'call from below.'"

The "call from above" means there is sufficient evidence that the call the minister feels on her or his life is God-inspired. The "call from below" is the decision from within the congregation to accept her or his leadership into the life of the church. For us Baptists, ordination is the celebration of both of these calls.

In September, our moderator, Rick Kane in conjunction with Church Council, called for an Ordination Council to interview and discern Pastor Nate's qualifications for Christian Ordination.

The council members included Scottie Kerby, Marcy Nester, Seth Price, Carla Thomas, Don Thomas, Shannon White (Pastor at Wilton Presbyterian Church), and myself.

On October 17, after multiple rounds of conversation, book studies, and essay writing, the Ordination Council recommended to the church Nate's candidacy for ordination. The vote passed unanimously.

In that business meeting, I was reminded that, as a church, we can trust God’s presence and providence in Nate's life as we look to him for wisdom, guidance, love, and charity.

It is evident to me Nate has the skillset and demeanor to be an outstanding minister for a very long time. He loves the church. He knows himself. He is passionate about instilling the love of Christ into the hearts of our youth.

The ordination ceremony is set for November 11, 2018, at 5:00 pm in the sanctuary with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. We will practice the time-honored tradition of laying on of hands as well as speak words of blessing.

Join us as we honor and celebrate God's call on Nate's life. This is an exciting time for him as well as our church.

Peace & Joy,
Pastor Barrett
